Comfort Doesn’t Grow You—Challenge Does

I'm four months into my role as AFGSC/A4 SEL—and honestly, I'm enjoying it more than I ever expected. To be completely transparent, I didn’t want the position. In fact, I turned it down three times. But when Brigadier General Miller hired me, he said, “Congrats… I’m sorry.” I’m grateful he did.

Brig. Gen. Miller and Mr. Miller have given me an incredible opportunity to learn and grow. This role has challenged me mentally and emotionally—and it’s exactly what I needed.

When I was serving as the A4A Combat Aircraft Division SEL, I felt like I was doing good work… but I wasn’t challenged. I enjoyed the position—it was comfortable and stable. My coach, Megan, used to say, “If you’re comfortable, you’re not growing.” And wow, was she right.

I stepped into the A4 SEL role with hesitation, fear, and discomfort. Despite my reluctance, I took the leap—and I’ve grown. There have been moments where I’ve leaned into my rank and realized: I’m at the table for a reason. Instead of sitting quietly, I chose to stand up and speak boldly. I told my inner imposter to shove it.

I’ve also had the opportunity to coach members of my team. At first, I thought I was just practicing coaching for my own development. But after several sessions, I realized I do bring value. I was reminded that as a SNCO and Chief, it’s my responsibility to coach and mentor SNCOs, Officers, and civilians in my workplace. The benefit is mutual.

I’ve had the unique privilege of working with a remarkable power couple—Brigadier General Miller and Mr. Miller. Having worked together previously, they form an exceptional team. General Miller brings a patient and collaborative approach, while Mr. Miller is forthright and direct. Together, their individual strengths create a dynamic synergy that serves as a masterclass in leadership.

Growth isn't always comfortable - but it's always worth it.
